Guillotine or swing beam shear: compare the cutting requirement

Start with the material grade, maximum thickness and longest cut. A capacity stated for mild steel should not be assumed to apply to stainless steel at the same thickness. Sheet support, blade clearance, rake angle and backgauge configuration also affect whether a shear suits your parts and production method.

Common shearing machine buying questions

Can a shear cut profiles and internal openings?

A sheet metal shear is primarily for straight cuts from an accessible sheet edge. Internal holes and complex contours usually require another process, such as punching or laser cutting. Share the complete part drawing so the production process can be considered before choosing equipment.

Why do blade clearance and rake angle matter?

Blade clearance should suit material and thickness. An unsuitable setting can affect burrs and edge quality. Rake angle influences cutting load and sheet deformation; narrow strips can be especially sensitive. Compare cut samples using representative material and agree on acceptable results rather than relying only on a capacity label.

Does a digital backgauge guarantee finished part accuracy?

Backgauge positioning is only one factor. Sheet alignment, support, material condition and blade settings affect the finished cut. State the tolerance needed on the finished part, and confirm how the quoted machine will be set up and checked. For flexible sheets, discuss support during positioning and cutting.

Use the shearing force calculator as a preliminary reference. Confirm the capacity against your material, cutting length and the proposed machine specification before ordering.
